The Anointing of the Sick is administered to bring spiritual and even physical healing during illness, especially near the time of death.
 
The Sacrament of Annointing can be received at any time of need, and may be received more than once.
It is likely one of the last Sacraments a Christian will receive. 
Like all Sacraments, this annointing is an outward sign established by Christ, the Divine Physician, to confer healing, by God's will, of mind, body and spirit.
Sacraments are rites performed to convey God’s grace to the recipient, through the power of the Holy Spirit.
 

"Is any sick among you? Let him call for the presbyters of the church, and let them pray over him, anointing him with oil in the name of the Lord."  (James 5:14)
