First Reconciliation and Communion

At St. Thomas More, First Communion is usually received in 2nd Grade, and occurs a few months after First Reconciliation. To prepare for both Sacraments, we use the program Blessed by Dynamic Catholic.

We have received great feedback about this program. It is able to communicate the deep truths of God's love at a level appropriate for those receiving the Sacraments. For more information on this program, click HERE to view their comprehensive website for yourself.
First Reconciliation can be intimidating for a young person. We encourage parents and catechists to receive the Sacrament the same evening as the children, to lead by example and to demonstrate there is nothing to be scared of.

First Communion marks a momumental point in a child's faith journey, because from then on they have Jesus truly present within them. However, the fact that Jesus is truly present in the Eucharist is a very hard concept for a child to grasp. The lived experience means so much more than the mere teaching!

Because of this, in order for our kids to be properly disposed to receive this Sacrament, we invite them to come to Mass reguarly. To make this realistic, we strive to make Mass as inviting a place for young people as possible. Please help us in this goal by bringing your children, staying for Coffee and Donuts on Sunday, and helping them make friends at Mass by following these tips, building up a joyful atmosphere at church.

First Communion at St. Thomas More is a two-year process, meaning a student is required to have been in Faith Formation (at any Catholic church) for at least one year prior to their Sacrament year.

First Reconciliation is generally held in late-January, and First Communion is the first Sunday of May. These times can vary from year-to-year--a full schedule of the 2024-25 Faith Formation year is now available.

NOTE: Do you have an older child who has not yet received First Communion? Grade level never restricts someone from making a Sacrament. Please reach out if you have someone not in 2nd Grade who would like to make their First Holy Communion soon.
