Go, therefore, and make disciples of all nations." (Matthew 28:19)
The heart of evangelization and the Church’s mission is to spread the Good News of the life, death and ressurrection of Jesus to others. Because Sacred Scripture, the Bible, is the Word of God, and Jesus is The Word - the Logos who created light, life and humanity (John 1:1-5) - every page of Scripture speaks of Jesus Christ and is Jesus speaking to our hearts. This means that proclaiming the Word as a Lector at Mass is more than a mere public reading of what’s on a page. Lectors make Christ present in our minds. Proclaimers of the Word bring Jesus into our hearts.
The Roman Missal says “when the Sacred Scriptures are read in the Church, God himself speaks to his people.” Proclaiming the Word points the Way to eternal life. Lectors bring this universal reality to others.
Being a Lector is a powerful way to participate in the Liturgy, and a most rewarding opportunity to use your gifts and to share Jesus with others. Serving as a Reader means standing up as a witness to the Truth of Christ’s presence among us, in our parish, to our families, and for our lives.
Is the Holy Spirit calling you to be a Reader, and in this way to share Jesus with others? You are encouraged to pray about it. Pray for the conviction to say “Yes” to the call and to embrace the gift of proclaiming Jesus Christ into our midst. Not sure? Talk with Deacon Michael or any Reader after Mass to learn more.
Confirmed men and women sixteen years of age and older can be Lectors at Masses. Readers welcome the assembly before Mass, make announcements and proclaim the Word of God in the first and second readings. Also, unless the Deacon exercises this office, lectors offer the universal intercessory Prayers of the Faithful.
Please contact the office for more information and to join this ministry.
